What a Licensed Adult Foster Care Home Is, and How It Differs From a Nursing Home

Grace Haven Senior Living ·

When families start looking, the words run together: assisted living, adult foster care, nursing home, memory care. In Michigan these are different things with different licenses, and knowing which one you are looking at helps you ask the right questions.

Adult foster care in Michigan

Grace Haven is licensed by the State of Michigan as an adult foster care home (license AL830419729). Our license is for a large group home with a capacity of 20 residents, and it covers care for aged residents and residents with Alzheimer's disease. The state inspects us, sets staffing and safety rules, and keeps our record public.

In everyday language, a home like ours is what most people mean by assisted living: residents have their own private rooms, eat meals together, get help with bathing, dressing, grooming and medications, and have staff on site around the clock.

How a nursing home differs

A skilled nursing facility is licensed for medical care that needs nurses on every shift: IVs, wound care, ventilators, rehabilitation after surgery. It is the right place for someone who is medically unstable. It is also more institutional and far more expensive.

Most older adults do not need that level of care. They need safety, meals, help with daily tasks, and company. That is what we do.

What about hospice or therapy?

Residents at Grace Haven can bring outside services in. Home health, hospice, and physical or occupational therapy all come to the resident here, so a change in health does not automatically mean a move.

Why the license matters to you

A license means someone besides the owner is checking. You can look up any Michigan adult foster care home on the state's public lookup and see its license status, capacity, and history. We encourage families to do that for us and for anyone else they are considering.

Why a small home

With twenty residents at most, staff know everyone by name, by habit, and by mood. That is hard to do in a building with 120 apartments. For a parent who has lived in a small northern Michigan town all their life, a small home feels familiar.
