Fifteen Questions to Ask Any Assisted Living Home Before You Decide
Every home will show you a clean lobby. These questions get underneath it. We answer all of them on our own tours, and we think every home should.
Staff and safety
- Is staff awake all night, or on call?
- How many staff are on a typical day shift and night shift?
- Are staff CPR and First Aid certified?
- Who administers medications, and how are they tracked?
- What happens if my parent falls or gets sick at 2 a.m.?
Cost
- What is the monthly fee, exactly?
- What is not included? Is there a care-level charge that goes up over time?
- Are there move-in, application, or community fees?
- Do you accept Medicaid and long-term care insurance?
Daily life
- Are rooms private? Do they have private bathrooms?
- Are meals cooked on site? Can I see a menu or eat a meal?
- What did residents do last weekend?
- Can my parent bring their own furniture?
The long run
- Can my parent stay if their needs increase? Can hospice come in?
- Is the home licensed by the State of Michigan, and may I see the license number?
