Choosing Care

Is It Time? Seven Signs Your Parent May Need More Support

Grace Haven Senior Living ·

Most families do not decide on assisted living in one conversation. They notice something small, let it go, notice something else, and eventually the pile gets too big to ignore. If you are reading this from Cadillac, Traverse City, or somewhere downstate while your mom or dad lives alone near Manton, you are probably already in that stage.

Here are the signs families tell us they saw first.

1. The refrigerator tells a story

Spoiled food, the same leftovers for a week, or very little food at all. Skipped meals show up as weight loss, low energy, and confusion that looks worse than it is.

2. Medications are off

A pill organizer with Tuesday still full on Friday. Bottles from three pharmacies. Refills that lapse. For many of the residents who come to us, medication confusion was the first real safety problem, which is one reason our home is pharmacist-owned and medication administration is part of every day.

3. A fall, or a near miss

A bruise nobody can explain. A new habit of holding the wall. Northern Michigan winters make this worse; one icy step is all it takes.

4. The house is slipping

Mail piling up, laundry not done, a stove burner left on. Keeping a house in Wexford County is work even for people in their forties.

5. Loneliness

Days with no conversation. A parent who used to go to church, the senior center, or the coffee shop and now stays in. Isolation is hard on the body, not just the spirit.

6. You are the one wearing down

Driving up every weekend. Calling three times a day. Lying awake wondering. If the caregiver is breaking, the arrangement is not working, even if your parent is managing.

7. They say so, quietly

"I don't like being here alone at night." "I'm tired of cooking." Many parents will not ask directly. They hint.

What to do next

You do not have to decide anything today. Visit a home or two. Ask what a day looks like. Ask what is included in the price and what is not. At Grace Haven every resident has a private room with a private bathroom, staff are awake all night, and three meals a day are cooked here. Seeing a place in person takes the fear out of the question.
