Awake, Not On Call: Why Overnight Staffing Is the Question to Ask
Here is a question that separates care homes more than almost any other: at 2 a.m., is someone awake?
Some homes have staff who sleep on site and respond if called. Some have a monitor and a phone. At Grace Haven, staff are alert and awake all night, every night. It is the first line in our list of included services for a reason.
Why nights matter
Falls happen on the way to the bathroom in the dark. Confusion is worse at night, especially for residents with memory loss. Chest pain, trouble breathing, and fevers do not wait for morning. A resident who needs help at night needs it from someone who is already up.
What awake staff do
They make rounds. They help residents to the bathroom. They notice the resident who is restless or breathing differently. They are the reason an adult child in Grand Rapids can sleep.
Training
Our staff are CPR and First Aid certified. Physician services are on call. If something is wrong, there is a plan and a person to carry it out.
The question to ask
Wherever you tour, ask it plainly: "Is someone awake all night, or on call?" Then ask how many. The answer tells you a great deal about how a home thinks about its residents.
