A Day at Grace Haven: Meals, Activities, and Quiet Time
Families ask what a day is like, and the honest answer is that it looks a lot like a good day at home, with more people in it and less work.
Morning
Residents wake on their own schedule. Staff help with washing, dressing, and grooming as needed, and morning medications are given. Breakfast is cooked here and served in the dining room, where the farmhouse tables fill up with conversation and the windows look out on the fields.
Midday
This is when the activities program runs: painting, dominoes, bingo, music, a visiting musician on the patio when the weather is good, or a walk outside. Nobody is required to join. Some residents read in their rooms or watch the news. Lunch is a full hot meal.
Afternoon
Quiet time. Naps, phone calls with family, the hairdresser on her monthly visit, the podiatrist every few months. Housekeeping and laundry happen in the background every day, so rooms stay the way residents like them.
Evening
Supper, a snack later, evening medications, and help getting ready for bed. Then the part families worry about most: night. Our staff are awake, not on call, all night long. If a resident needs help at 3 a.m., someone is up and there.
The in-between
Birthdays get celebrated. Holidays get decorated. In the fall there is a festival with families and friends; at Christmas, children come to sing carols. On ordinary days, the best part is often just sitting in the sun on the patio.
