Respite Care: A Real Break for Family Caregivers

Grace Haven Senior Living ·

If you are the person caring for your mother or father at home, you already know what the research says: family caregivers get sick more, sleep less, and burn out. What you may not know is that a short stay in a home like ours exists for exactly this reason.

What respite care is

Overnight respite care at Grace Haven is a temporary stay, from a few nights to a few weeks, when we have a room available. The cost is $200 per day. During the stay your parent gets everything a full-time resident gets: a private room with bathroom, three meals, help with bathing and dressing, medication administration, activities, and awake staff all night.

When families use it

  • A vacation, the first in years
  • Your own surgery or recovery
  • A work trip, a wedding downstate, a grandchild's graduation
  • After a parent's hospital discharge, when home is not quite ready
  • A trial run before a long-term decision

About the guilt

Almost every caregiver who calls about respite apologizes for asking. You are not abandoning anyone. You are making sure the person who takes care of your parent, you, can keep doing it. Your parent will be safe, fed, and in company.

How it works

Call us. We will tell you honestly whether a room is open for your dates. We will ask for a medication list and a little background. Your parent can bring their own pillow and a few familiar things.
