Caring for a Parent in Northern Michigan When You Live Somewhere Else
Northern Michigan has a particular pattern: the parents stayed, the kids moved to Grand Rapids, Detroit, Chicago, or farther. Now Mom is near Manton and you are four hours away, and every phone call that goes unanswered is a small panic.
What long-distance families worry about
That nobody would know if something happened. That the house is falling apart. That the drive up every other weekend is not sustainable with your own kids and job. That your parent is lonely and will not say so.
How a small home helps
At Grace Haven, someone is always there, awake at night, and knows your parent well enough to notice a change. You hear from us when something matters. You can call and talk to a person who saw your mother at breakfast.
Staying close from far away
- Set a standing phone or video call. Residents can have a personal landline in their room for $40 a month, and staff can help with a tablet call.
- Follow our Facebook page. We post the fall festival, the live music, birthdays, and ordinary afternoons. Many families spot their parent in a photo before we have even told them about the event.
- Send mail. A card on the dresser is something to show the neighbors at supper.
- Plan visits around something: a holiday party, a birthday, the Halloween costume afternoon.
Getting here
We are just north of Cadillac off US-131, about twenty minutes from the Cadillac exits and under an hour from Traverse City. Families driving up from downstate find it an easy trip.
If you are far away and worried, call (231) 824-7770. We can talk through what is possible, and set up a tour for your next trip north.
